Watson helps Thongchai foundation

Double Masters winner Bubba Watson has donated US$9,250 to Thongchai Jaidee Foundation.

The 36-year-old American, ranked fourth in the world, earned the sum for his joint 25th place at last week's Thailand Golf Championship.

The reigning Masters champion informed the organisers of his intention to donate his prize money to the foundation established by Thai star Thongchai Jaidee.

"It is always a pleasure to be in Thailand and we have had a wonderful time," said Watson's management team in an email.

"Bubba wants to show a sign of respect and gratitude to Thailand.

"As you may know he has a passion for helping kids in need.

"He believes that the best way to help is to help Thongchai in his efforts to support kids and junior golf."

World No.39 Thongchai, who founded the foundation in 1999, thanked Watson for his kindness and said that it would be a great benefit for the needy.

Apart from supporting young golfers across Thailand, the foundation, chaired by Thongchai, also extends its assistance to underprivileged schools and temples.

Three-time Asian Tour No.1 Thongchai, 45, is the most successful Thai golfer of all time.

Thongchai, who came from a poor family, has won six European Tour titles and 13 Asian Tour events.

He shared sixth place at last week's Thailand Golf Championship.

Meanwhile, Kwanchai Tannin yesterday won the 10th leg of the Thailand PGA Tour 2014.

The 29-year-old made a final 72 to win the title on 278 at the par-70 Panorama Golf and Country Club in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Kwanchai, who received 125,000 baht, was a stroke ahead of Paramet Sonthirati who got 75,000 baht.

In Dubai, Thailand's Prom Meesawat will be aiming to end his 2014 season on a winning note at the inaugural Dubai Open starting today in his hopes of finishing second on the Asian Tour's Order of Merit.

Anirban Lahiri of India, currently second on the ranking, is skipping the final tournament of the season after American David Lipsky all but clinched the Merit crown with an unassailable lead following last week's Thailand Golf Championship.

However, the burly Prom plans to take advantage on the leading duo's absence by lifting the US$90,000 winner's cheque on offer at The Els Club Dubai.

"This is a good week for me to try to win a tournament to move myself up to second on the Order of Merit and get myself in the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship next year," said Prom, who is currently ranked third on the Order of Merit list.

"With the way I'm playing right now, I'm very confident with my game, and I've been playing good for a couple months.

"I didn't have a good finish last week, but still, I'm playing good, hitting some good shots. Hope I will do it this week."
