Suphan Buri retain National Games overall title

Nakhon Ratchasima: Suphan Buri retained the overall title at the 43rd National Games yesterday.

Suphan Buri built an unassailable lead of 30 gold medals with one day to go.

It is the province's third overall crown after their success in 2013 and 1994.

The hosts yesterday claimed nine of 18 gold medals on offer in boxing.

Nonthaburi got two gold medals in badminton. They were successful in the women's doubles (Prangnut Lerthiran and Panjarat Pransophon) and the mixed doubles (Prangnut Lerthiran and Trawut Photiang).

Adulrat Namkul of Ayutthaya beat Polakorn Jaratjindawong of Songkhla in the men's singles final.

Bangkok's Supida Ketthong beat Thamolwan Poopradapsil of Nonthaburi 2-1 in the women's singles final, while Ingkarat Aphisuk and Thitipong Lapoh of Trang took gold in the men's doubles.

On the last day of weightlifting, Pittaya Tiebnok broke a record in the men's 105kg event and swept three golds for Surin.

He set a new mark of 149kg in snatch and lifted 185kg in clean and jerk for 334kg in total. In the women's 75kg, Mukda Saisa-ad got three golds for the hosts.

In tennis, Jirat Nawasirisomboon won the men's singles title for Suphan Buri while Boonyawi Thamchaiwat from Nakhon Ratchasima won the women's title.

Jirat also got gold in the mixed doubles with his partner Piangtharn Phipuet after upsetting Veerapat Dokmaikli and Nuengnadda Wannasuk of Nakhon Ratchasima.

The 44th National Games will be held in Nakhon Sawan from Dec 11-22 next year.
