"Tomorrow is the final match and I'd like to call on every Thai to cheer and support the team," Gen Prayut said in his weekly TV programme.

"I wish them the best of luck."

Thailand beat Malaysia 2-0 in the first leg in Bangkok with Charyl Chappuis and Kroekrit Thaweekarn on target.

The prime minister thanked the national football team for making Thais happy.

"I have watched them play on TV and I'd like to thank the players, coach and manager of the War Elephants for bringing happiness to Thais,'' he said.

The premier said the team, like his government, faced high expectations.

"There are expectations for the government and footballers," Prayut said.

"But don't be nervous. I will give you moral support.

"Don't put extra pressure on yourselves. If you do that, you won't be successful."

Earlier, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said his team needed a miracle to overcome Thailand and claim the Suzuki Cup trophy.
