Pornanong sets sights on top-10 finish

Pornanong Phatlum is targeting a top-10 finish on the LPGA Tour money list this year.

The 25-year-old Thai has gradually improved since joining the elite tour in 2009.

She reached her top-20 goal on the money list with US$735,031 in 26 tournaments last year and has set a higher target.

“I am satisfied with my performance last year when I was 20th,’’ said Pornanong who is building a golf course in her home province of Chaiyaphum.

“With more experience, I hope to get a top-10 finish this year. It will be tougher but I am ready for the challenge.”

Last season, she had seven top-10 finishes including second at the LPGA Malaysia, matching her previous career-best result at the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic in 2013.

In her preparations for the new season, Pornanong took putting lessons in Belgium and her confidence has been boosted by her fourth win at the Hitachi Ladies Classic in Taiwan on Sunday.

“In the final part of last year, I struggled with putting. I now feel more confident after training in Belgium. With the win in Taiwan, I am ready for the new season,’’ she said.

Ranked 27th in the world, Pornanong will play at the season-opening Coates Golf Championship in Florida from Jan 28-31 and then the Bahamas LPGA Classic where she was tied for third last year.

She will skip the Women’s Australian Open from Feb 19-22 to prepare for the Honda LPGA Thailand the following week.

"I want to do my best for Thai fans,'' Pornanong said.
