Wanheng set for title defence

Thai will seek to keep atomweight belt when he faces Galero in Nakhon Sawan next month

WBC champion Wanheng Menayothin will make the first defence of his atomweight title against Jeffrey Galero of the Philippines next month.

Wanheng Menayothin, right, beat Oswaldo Novoa in November.

The Thai, who dethroned Oswaldo Novoa in Chon Buri in November, will face the Filipino in Nakhon Sawan on Feb 5.

Both Wanheng, 29, and Galero, 24, are unbeaten with the former having a record of 36 wins (12KOs) and the latter 11 wins (5KOs).

Wirat Wachirarattanawongse said he was confident Wanheng from Maha Sarakham would retain the belt and after that he wanted the boxer to defend the title in Thailand for at least three more times before going abroad.

Meanwhile, Teerachai Kratingdaenggym will defend his Paba welterweight title on Feb 6 in Bangkok. In his 23rd defence of the title, the 22-year-old will take on Nthuthuko Memela of South Africa.

Despite an impressive record with 10 wins (7KOs), Memela will not be able to handle the powerful Teerachai, the champion's handlers said. Teerachai has knocked out 22 opponents in his 28 wins.

His manager Niwat Laosuwanwat hoped that Teerachai would win to move closer to a world championship fight.

In London, British world welterweight champion Kell Brook announced he will fight Romanian Jo Jo Dan in March in his first fight since being stabbed in the leg last September. Brook, 28, won the IBF title by beating America's Shawn Porter last August.
