Top seed Peng cruises into second round

Pattaya: All three Thai players in the singles at the PTT Thailand Open were eliminated in the first round yesterday.

Top seed Peng Shuai of China in action against Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva.

Veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn, 38, lost 7-6 (7/2), 6-0 to Japan's Misaki Doi at the Dusit Thani.

Thailand's top player, Luksika Kumkham, is still looking for her first win in Pattaya after a 6-2, 6-2 loss to New Zealand's Marina Erakovic.

Wildcard Nicha Lertpitaksinchai was well beaten by fourth seed Nara Kurumi of Japan 6-2, 6-1.

Top seed Peng Shuai of China needed only 76 minutes to beat Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-2 to meet Doi in the next round.

It was Peng's first ever win against the Russian who had beaten the world No.21 Chinese in 2008 at Wimbledon and the Beijing Olympics.

Former world No.2 Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who received a wild card, advanced to the second round after beating China Wang Qiang 6-2, 6-2.

Meanwhile, second seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine has withdrawn from the tournament because she could not arrive in Thailand in time after her flight from Budapest was abruptly cancelled, organisers said.

Her place has gone to compatriot Yuliya Beygelzimer, a lucky loser from the qualifying round.

She will face Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm.
