Chanathip to lead Kiatisak’s national squad for 2016 Olympic qualifying round

Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang yesterday announced his initial 46 players for the 2016 Olympic qualifying round.

The squad is led by Chanathip Songkrasin and a couple of other full international stars including Tanaboon Ketsarat and Pinyo Inpinit.

They are under-22 players who will take part in next month's qualifying round for next year's AFC U23 Championship.

The tournament, to be held in Qatar, is also Asia's final qualifying round for the 2016 Olympics.

In the qualifying round, Thailand will host Group G which also features North Korea, the Philippines and Cambodia.

The top teams of each of the 10 qualifying groups plus five best second-placed sides will qualify for the finals along with hosts Qatar.

The top three teams from the AFC U23 finals will represent the continent at the Rio Olympics.

Thailand will begin their campaign against Cambodia on March 27 and then face the Philippines on March 29 and North Korea on March 31.

Thailand and North Korea are expected to vie for the top spot of their group.

"We only have one month to prepare for the tournament," said Kiatisak.

"We must try to score as many goals as possible against Cambodia and the Philippines before we meet North Korea in the final match. It will be difficult for us to qualify for the Olympics. Asia gets only three spots for the Olympics while it gets four and a half berths for the World Cup."

Thailand have played in two Olympics when qualifying was not as tough as it is now.

This year, Thailand will also play at the SEA Games (U23 tournament) and begin their 2020 World Cup qualifying round.

Kiatisak is also in charge of the U23 and full national team.

Chanathip, 21, was one of the key players of the Thai team that won the AFF Suzuki Cup in December.

He scored a couple of crucial goals and was voted the best player of the tournament.
