Qatar track and field chief launches athletics election bids

DOHA - One of the most senior figures in Qatari sport, Dahlan Al-Hamad, will run in elections for the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) later this year.

Al-Hamad is seeking to retain his position as vice-president of the IAAF and president of the AAA.

"My personal dream to establish my country into the world's athletics decision-makers has become a reality, but my aspirations for the future of world athletics do not end here," Al-Hamad told a press conference on Monday, as he announced his intention to run.

"I am determined to do whatever is required to keep up the development of the sport from its grassroots not only in Qatar, but in the wider Asian continent."

He has been vice-president of the IAAF since 2007 and headed the AAA since 2013.

At the same time he is also president of the Qatar Athletics Federation.

Qatar will host the 2019 World Athletics Championships.
