Talent can be crucial ingredient

We’re told ‘talent’ is also a rare resource and I was thinking back recently on how many really talented golfers I’ve had in front of me over the years, and that I’ve had the pleasure to coach over the years — but what is talent?

Definitions of talent have that rare gift of confusing everyone, but in golf it’s clear to see and determine by any experienced golf coach. There is a growing belief among the specialists in the field of human behaviour, that it is only a minority of golfers that are true to themselves. These golfers know they are talented and just ooze confidence.

So many people don’t really know whether they are talented or not. The majority of the people in the world just function, get on with it and go through the motions.

But it is a fact that human resources are like natural resources — they are buried deep and you have to look for them.

Ask someone in the oil and gas or water industry, they’ll tell you that a lot of the time you drill for it and come up with something you didn’t expect.

Young talented golfers really need to b pointed in the right direction — yet — just having a pretty swing will not guarantee a good score. Clear, mature and positive thinking is also a talent that’s required.

Out of Bound: Overheard in the bar of one local golf club recently — “When I read about the evils of drinking after golfing I gave up reading.”
