Trio slated to win awards

Boxer Amnat Ruenroeng, cyclist Jutatip Maneephan and bowling player Yannapol Larpaparat are favourites to win the top awards from the Sports Writers' Association of Thailand.

Singha Corporation president Santi Bhirombhakdi, centre, presides over the Singha Sports Hall of Fame event yesterday. The function was held to honour athletes who are sponsored by the company.

Amnat successfully retained his IBF flyweight title against China's Zou Shiming in Macau on Saturday and the 35-year-old fighter is expected to claim the best male professional athlete award.

His opponents are golfer Thongchai Jaidee and WBC minimumweight champion Wanheng Meenayothin.

Yannapol, who won Thailand's first gold medal of the 2014 Asian Games, is likely to win the best male athlete award ahead of boxer Wutthichai Masuk and footballer Chanatip Songkrasin.

Jutatip, who got gold in the road race at last year's Asian Games, is favourite to take the best female athlete award ahead of BMX cyclist Amanda Carr and taekwondo star Chanatip Sonkham who were also crowned champions at the Incheon Asian Games.

Amnat's trainer Francisco Jaro of the Philippines is a contender for the best trainer in professional sports with other candidates including Brazil's Alexandre Gama, coach of Thai Premier League champions Buriram United, and Wanheng's trainer Suparb Boonrod.

The award ceremony will be held on March 28 at the Miracle Grand hotel.
