MADRID - Last season's finalists Atletico Madrid edged through to the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 on penalties after the last 16 tie ended 1-1 on aggregate.

Mario Suarez' deflected first-half effort for Atletico secured the hosts a 1-0 win on the night and levelled the tie.
Suarez' effort ended Atletico's goal drought in the competition at just shy of two hours and was the first goal Bayer had conceded in six matches.
