Star-studded tournament begins today

An enticing snooker fest involving some of the biggest names in the game is all set to kick off today at the Montien Riverside Hotel.

And the march of these stalwarts to the final stage of the 2015 Players Championship hadn't been an easy one.

The top 24 players from the World Snooker-organised European Tour Order of Merit and top eight contestants from the Asian Tour have qualified for the event, which offers almost 15 million baht in prize money. It is also one of the world professional ranking tournaments.

On-song Thai Thepchaiya Un-nooh, who created history of sorts at the Indian Open earlier this month by becoming the only second Thai player after James Wattana to qualify for the semi-finals of a world ranking tournament, is the lone local player in the field of 32 who will be chasing the winner's cheque of five million baht.

With the short best-of-seven frame format being used for the Players Championship, Thepchaiya's fate in the event remains as uncertain as any other in-form stars in the running.

Thepchaiya said: "This is altogether a different event. My performance at the Indian Open has given me a lot of confidence, but you need more than that at any given event.

"It is is going to be tough out there. I am going to give my best shot and I have been on the practice table a lot since my return from India over a week ago."

The Thai sensation plays his first match of the lucrative event against former world professional champion Mark Williams of Wales tomorrow at 9pm.

While reigning world No.1 Mark Selby of England, Australian magician Neil Robertson (No.2) and Chinese maestro Ding Junhui (No.4) are all hoping to go the distance, one can't overlook the English potting ace Judd Trump, who is ranked No.7 in the world.

Trump was in brilliant form when he upstaged world No.3 Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-7 in the Grand Prix final on Sunday after capturing six frames in a row.

Welshman Michael White, up to No.17 spot in the world rankings, has also been making waves on the international scene with his latest exploits involving the Indian Open trophy earlier this month and should be taken seriously.

The match of the day today that promises to lure a lot of local snooker fans is likely to be clash between Robertson and Hong Kong's world No.10 Marco Fu at 7.30pm.

Eight matches are scheduled to be contested on the opening day today with the first session starting at 2.30pm and the second at 7.30pm.
