Phaiboon new Port coach

Phaiboon Lertvimolrat has been appointed coach of Thai Premier League side Port, replacing Somchai Chuayboonchum, club chairwoman Nuanphan Lamsam announced yesterday.

Port, white, have suffered four defeats in five matches.

Somchai said he resigned to shoulder responsibility for the team's stuttering start to the season.

Port had one win and four defeats in their first five games of the season and are 15th in the 18-team league. Their only victory was against newcomers Saraburi who are still looking for their first point in the top flight.

"I resigned because we failed to meet the target and nobody is happy with the results,'' said Somchai, one of the most respected coaches in Thai football. "I will take a break and will not consider any offer at the moment."

Nuanphan, who took over the club just before the season started, said she respected Somchai's decision. "I was shocked by his resignation. Somchai is a good coach and one of the true professional coaches in Thai football,'' said Nuanphan, who is also manager of the women's national team.

"After we talked to him and listened to his reason, we can only respect his decision. I understand him and would like to thank him for his time with the team."

Nuanphan also appointed former national team coach Charnwit Phalajivin as Port vice-chairman.

Port will travel to Si Sa Ket in the TPL tomorrow.
