Tigers claim title in Hua Hin Sixes

The Bangkok Post-Hua Hin Cricket Sixes ended with a real flourish yesterday.

Taking advantage of the new pitch at the Dusit Thani Hua Hin Resort, batsmen had the upper hand on the last day, but key defensive gems also caught the crowd's attention.

In the Veterans final, the Gold Coast Tigers struggled to find their usually fluid batting form.

But they dug in, and with minor but useful contributions from all of their batsmen they brought up a respectable total of 64.

Defending champions Leongatha Woodchoppers then set out in pursuit, chipping away until they reached their final over needing 10 runs to make it two in a row.

The Tigers brought in last-over specialist Andy Green to bowl. With one delivery to go, the Choppers needed one run to tie, two to win.

Green's delivery produced a potentially match-winning drive from the batsman. But Tigers' popular Colonel Sanders leapt up to pluck the ball from the air, his catch ending the Chopper's inning and their reign. The Tigers, frequently runners-up, had made it at last.

In the Masters, undefeated Melbourne were upset by the Willsmere Wanderers in the final.

In the Cup, Thai Thevada were in a class of their own and easily won the title.
