Djokovic pulls out of Madrid Masters

MADRID - World number one Novak Djokovic will miss the Madrid Masters next week to rest as he attempts to complete the career Grand Slam at next month's French Open.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic celebrates after winning against Tomas Berdych in the Monte-Carlo ATP Masters Series Tournament final tennis match, on April 19, 2015 in Monaco

"The Serbian announced that he will not compete at the Caja Magica and will take a period of rest before continuing his planned schedule at the tournaments in Rome and Roland Garros," the tournament organisers said in a statement on Wednesday.

Djokovic also missed last year's tournament in the Spanish capital due to a wrist injury.

The 27-year-old has been in sensational form this season, winning the Australian Open and Masters series events Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo.

However, he has chosen to forego the chance to extend his lead at the top of the rankings even further in his quest to end Rafael Nadal's dominance on the clay in Paris.
