Kiradech set for Wentworth

Kiradech set for Wentworth

Kiradech Aphibarnrat will be fit for next week's BMW PGA Championship, his handlers said yesterday.

The 26-year-old Thai was forced to withdraw after the first round of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open last week due to neck and back pains.

He is recovering well and has played a few practice rounds to get ready for the BMW PGA Championship, the European Tour's flagship event, at Wentworth in England.

"He felt pain and could not play last week,'' said his father Panupong.

"He has since become better after a rest and can now play practice rounds. I am sure he will be fit next week."

Two-time European Tour winner Kiradech is currently 79th in the world rankings and is hoping to be in the top 60 after the BMW PGA Championship for a place at next month's US Open.

It may not be easy for him to get a good result at Wentworth as he missed the cut in his previous two appearances at the €5 million tournament.

However, Kiradech is brimming with confidence after winning the European Tour's Shenzhen International last month.

He is currently ninth in the Race to Dubai.

"He is looking forward to the challenge at Wentworth," Panupong said. "His goal this season is to break into the top 50 in the world."

At the BMW PGA Championship, Kiradech will be joined by world No.49 Thongchai Jaidee.

Thongchai has struggled with his form lately. He missed the cut in his last two tournaments — the Players Championship and the Heritage.

But Wentworth is a good venue for the six-time European Tour winner as he has missed the cut there only once in 10 appearances.

His best result at the BMW PGA Championship was joint eighth in 2007.
