Having a go-to shot

Having a go-to shot

You’ve got to have a shot up your sleeve where you know what the ball is going to do when the chips are down! — I really thought that Branden Grace was the man who was going to be holding the US Open trophy last week. I was shocked when his ball went straight right on the 16th in the final round.

I’ve mentioned before the art of trying to control your body when under extreme golfing pressure, and here was a classic example of the severest of pressure in our game. Grace had three options; play a relatively easy three-wood, long iron or try for the green with a driver. The driver being the risk/reward shot. Unfortunately he’ll be reliving his decision and swing for a long time!

One of the reasons that makes our individual game stand head and shoulders above others, is that not only must we strictly control our movements when situations get tight but also have the gift of making clear calculated decisions when faced with an upcoming difficult round, stretch of holes or just one singular shot — just ask Dustin Johnson or Grace.

Out of Bounds: Continuing funny gravestone epitaphs, the following was sent in by a reader: Here lies golfer Bill-He always lied-And he always will-He lied once too often-And now he lies still.
