Buriram advance with shoot-out victory

Thai Premier League champions Buriram United beat FA Cup holders Bangkok Glass 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out following a scoreless draw to reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup last night.

In an entertaining encounter at Leo Stadium, both sides failed to find the net in 120 minutes as the match was decided by penalty kicks.

The two teams met again after an ill-tempered TPL match at Buriram two weeks ago when Glass striker Lazarus Kaimbi was sent off for punching Buriram captain Suchao Nutnum.

Namibia's Kaimbi received a four-match suspension, and Suchao one for his part in the incident in a scoreless draw at I-Mobile Stadium.

Midfielder Suchao returned to the starting line-up last night as both sides fielded several first-team players.

Buriram's attack was led by Brazilian forward Diogo Santo while Glass' strike force was spearheaded by new signing Aridane Santana of Spain.

Buriram and Bangkok Glass will continue their rivalry in the TPL. Buriram are leaders on 36 points, four ahead of Bangkok Glass.

In yesterday other League Cup matches, Khon Kaen United defeated Nakhon Ratchasima 2-0, Police United beat Ratchaburi 3-2, Phrae United thrashed Navy 3-0, Loei City lost 3-2 to Si Sa Ket after extra time, and Pattaya United upset Chonburi 3-1.

SOMCHAI NAMED PORT COACH

Somchai Subperm has been appointed coach of Thai Premier League strugglers Port.

Somchai, who was recently sacked by TPL bottom club TOT SC, was unveiled by Port president Nuanphan Lamsam yesterday.

Somchai replaces former Tottenham star Gary Stevens who was in charge at Port for only a couple of matches.

Port are currently third from last in the TPL and Somchai is their fourth coach this season.

Somchai Chuayboonchum left Port following a poor start to the season and was replaced by Paiboon Lertwimolrat.

Paiboon's reign last only a few weeks and was succeeded by Stevens, who was fired by Army United, another TPL team, earlier this year.

In the only TPL match last night, Suphanburi defeated Chainat 1-0 to put their title hope back on track.

Suphanburi are fourth on 28 points, five behind leaders Buriram United, while Chainat are 13th with 17 points.
