Bangkok Glass exit FA Cup after heavy loss to Buriram

Bangkok Glass' recent slump in form continued as Buriram United derailed their campaign to defend the FA Cup at the last 16 stage with a 3-1 thumping yesterday.

Buriram captain Suchao Nutnum, left, is challenged by a Bangkok Glass player.

The defending champions had been staring at a humiliating whitewash until the 80th minute of the encounter when an Aridane Santana header spared them some blushes.

Earlier, the two giants of local soccer had collided in the last 16 round of the League Cup where Buriram had edged Bangkok Glass in a penalty shoot-out.

Bangkok Glass had a bright start to the match and a well-executed free-kick by their captain Peerapong Pichitchotirat was warded off by Buriram goalkeeper Sivarak Tedsungnern.

The hosts Bangkok Glass were impressive in their attacks, but their failure to choke their rivals' counterattacks was also exposed time and again.

The first Buriram goal came in the 32nd minute when Diogo Santo picked up a pass from Theerathon Bunmathan and had little trouble planting the ball high up in the Bangkok Glass net.

Four minutes into the second half, Buriram doubled their advantage after a swift exchange between Gilberto Macena and Jakkraphan Kaewprom led to the latter firing a half-volley that grazed the post and ended up in the goal.

Bangkok Glass lost the control of the proceedings on the field and Buriram comfortably struck home their third goal when Theerathon's corner-kick was headed into the net by Andres Tunez in the 60th minute.

In-form Muang Thong United, the joint leaders of the Thai Premier League with Buriram, also cruised into the FA Cup quarter-finals following a 1-0 victory over Osotspa yesterday.

Prolific Brazilian Cleiton Silva delivered the winner for Muang Thong in the 28th minute.

Chainat Hornbills defeated Thai Honda 3-1 to move ahead while Chiang Rai United edged Kamphaengphet 2-1 to make it to the next stage.

Army were 2-1 winners over Port, Police registered a 2-0 victory over Krabi and Ratchaburi defeated Samut Songkhram 4-2.

The match yesterday to end in a stalemate in time was between Si Sa Ket and Chonburi, who played to a 1-1 draw.

In the extra-time, Chonburi prevailed over their opponents and won the match 3-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
