In-form Buriram move three points clear at top

Defending champions Buriram United yesterday edged Suphanburi 1-0 at home to move three points clear of Muang Thong United at the top of the Thai Premier League standings.

Buriram's Gilberto Macena, left, shoots against Suphanburi.

Barring upsets and with Muang Thong's 20th game of the season against Port being rescheduled to Sept 16, Buriram are likely to stay in front of the other title contenders for at least a month. The Kirins match has been moved due to the Bike for Mom activity today.

Buriram, playing in front of their home crowd at I-Mobile Stadium, went on the attack from the word go and could have captured a big lead had Gilberto Macena and Diogo Santo been on target.

Suphanburi relied mostly on counter-attacks and saw Chichanok Chaisangsurin's attempt cleared off by Buriram defenders.

Buriram netted the winner in the 37th minute when Jakkraphan Kaewprom split the Suphanburi defence open with a through pass to Brazilian striker Macena who fired home a spectacular volley.

The home team then dominated the game and had chances to widen the gap but Ko Seul-Ki and Santo's shots went wide on the either side of the halftime break.

Suphanburi gave Buriram a scare during the four-minute injury time when Napat Thumrongsupakorn set up Chitchanok whose header missed the goal by a whisker.

Meanwhile at Khao Plong Stadium, Chainat settled for a point at home when they finished tied 1-1 with bottom-placed TOT.

Somjet Sattabut put Chainat ahead in the 82nd minute before Kittanapob Mekpatcharakul equalised for the visitors in the 88th minute.

At His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium, Nakhon Ratchasima shared a point with visiting Chiang Rai United following a goalless draw.

Saraburi and Si Sa Ket also played to a draw in which neither side could find the net.

Ratchaburi defeated Army United 2-0 to collect three points from their home game. Heberty Fernandes (15th minute) and Wander Luiz (71st) scored for Ratchaburi.
