Thailand pin hopes on Wuttichai at Asian meet

The Asian Amateur Boxing Championships began yesterday at Thammasat University, Rangsit as Thailand target one title.

Wuttichai Masuk, left, fights South Korea's Lim Hyun-Chul at last year's Asian Games.

More than 180 fighters from 28 countries are taking part in the 10-division tournament.

China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan have participants in all weight classes.

Thailand have eight boxers with Asian Games gold medallist Wuttichai Masuk seen as their best hope.

Wuttichai, the top seed in the 64kg division, will face an opponent from Taiwan or Mongolia in the second round on Aug 31.

He is expected to meet Lim Hyun-Chul of South Korea in the semi-finals which would be a rematch of last year's Asian Games final won by the Thai.

"We want to get one gold and Wuttichai is our best bet," said Thailand coach Taweewat Islam after yesterday's draw. "It is a tough competition because a large number of good boxers in Asia are here."

In the 52kg class, Tanes Ongjunta is up against Olzhas Sattibayev of Kazakhstan in the second round.

Pachanya Longchin, who fights in Muay Thai as Superbank Mor Rattanabundit, will face Manish Kaushik of India in the second round of the 60kg category.

The Indian was a bronze medallist at the President's Cup in Indonesia earlier this year while Pachanya is making his debut in amateur boxing.

Sailom Ardee, who moved up from 60kg to 69kg, will start his campaign against Lee Seung-Hyeon of South Korea.

The winner is likely to fight Asian Games silver medallist Israil Madrivmov of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals.

The other Thais are Samak Saehan (49kg), Chatchai Butdee (56kg), Aphisit Khankhokkhruea (75kg) and Anavat Thongkrathok (81kg).

This year's tournament is important because it is a qualifying round for the World Championships to be held in Qatar later this year.

Six boxers of each division from the Asian meet will be eligible for Qatar which is a qualifying round for the 2016 Olympics.
