Australian teen Proverbs wins Thai amateur crown

Australia’s Blake Proverbs fired a six-under-par 65 in the final round to win the 81st Singha Thailand Amateur Open at Bangkok’s Panya Indra Golf Club yesterday.

The 19-year-old, who was one shot off the pace after three rounds, made a late charge by sinking one eagle and five birdies for 278.

Co-overnight leader Jun Ho Song of South Korea came in second after shooting a 67 for 279.

Proverbs received the King Rama VII trophy at the oldest amateur golf event in the country.

“I am happy to win here. My [Thai] caddie helped me a lot because she can speak English,” said Proverbs, who is on his first visit to Thailand.

The best Thai was first-round leader Napong Sriprasit who finished third on 280, one shot better than Gregory Foo of Singapore.

Rayhan John Thomas of the UAE was fourth on 284.

Thanaphum Khanchitworakun, the other joint overnight leader, had a round to forget with a 78.

The 19-year-old failed to make a single birdie and suffered six bogeys. He was tied for 11th.

In the women’s event, Aditi Ashok of India, 17, secured a wire-to-wire five-shot victory on 286.

Chakansim Khamborn shared second place with Gennai Goodwin of Australia on 291.
