Trio join presidential race

Three candidates will contest next month's Football Association of Thailand presidential election, the FAT announced yesterday.

From left, Worawi Makudi, Pisan Jundilok and Thawatchai Sajjakul.

The trio are current FAT president Worawi Makudi, Pol Lt Gen Pisan Jundilok and Thawatchai Sajjakul.

Each candidate must name his five vice-presidents and 13 people who would become members of the FAT executive board.

Worawi, who has been FAT president since 2007, is seen as favourite to win the race.

His five nominated vice-presidents include Nuanphan Lamsam, who quit as manager of the women's national team on Wednesday, and Thanes Kruarat, president of Thai Premier League side Chiang Rai United. Nuanphan is also CEO of TPL club Port.

The other members in Worawi team include Supasin Leelarit, vice-president of TPL club Bangkok Glass and Mitti Tiyapairat, president of TPL team Chiang Rai United.

Affectionately called 'Big Hoy', Thawatchai is a former national team manager.

He created the Dream Team national squad whose players included current national team coach Kiatisak Senamuang.

Members of Thawatchai's team for the FAT election include Klanarong Chantik, a National Legislative Assembly member and a former anti-corruption official, and former national team player Suthep Chansuthep.

Pisan is chief of the Provincial Police Region 3 and his candidates include police spokesman Pol Lt Gen Prawut Thawornsiri.

Under the new Sports Act which became law earlier this year, chief of a sport association will be in office for four years.

The FAT yesterday also announced members of its Election Commission headed by Thongchai Pornseth.

"I promise that the election will be fair,'' he said.

The previous election for FAT president two years ago was one of the most chaotic in the country's sporting history.

Worawi was re-elected following a legal struggle with candidate Virach Chanpanich and his supporters.
