Buriram widen gap as Kirins suffer shock loss

Yet another failure on the part of Thai Premier League title contenders SCG Muang Thong United yesterday helped arch rivals Buriram, who extended their winning streak to 10 matches, widen their lead at the top.

Muang Thong's Cleiton Silva, right, vies with Army's Dawut Dinkhet.

While Buriram ran riot again as they turned Osotspa's second game at their new stadium M Power Stadium into a nightmare by routing the hosts with a 6-3 tennis score, Muang Thong suffered a 2-1 upset at Army United.

The latest disappointing show by the Kirins means defending champions Buriram now enjoy a five-point advantage over Muang Thong, who have 63 points from 28 matches.

Suphanburi stole third place from Bangkok Glass on goal difference following a 2-1 victory at Ratchaburi. Both Suphanburi and the Glass Rabbits have 47 points, the same as Bangkok United who are in fifth spot.

Bangkok Glass have to beat BEC Tero in an away game today to ensure their return to third. Bangkok United are also in action today when they host Chiang Rai.

Osotspa were off to a good start when Leandro Oliveira put the hosts ahead in the eighth minute, but then they were hit by wave after wave of attacks by Buriram, who hammered six goals past their rivals in a row.

Korawit Namviset opened the floodgates for the visitors in the 15th and Gilberto Macena (24th), Diogo Santo (34th, 45th and 54th) and Naruebodin Weerawatnodom (44th) followed.

Scenting another victory, their 10th in a row, Buriram eased the pressure and Osotspa netted two goals through Ekaphan Inthasen in the 59th minute and Chainarong Tathong in injury time to make the score look somewhat respectable.

At Army Stadium, Muang Thong United toiled to keep their title chase on track but failed.

The game became exciting very early on when Army took the lead through Alexsander Medeiros in the third minute before Brazilian Cleiton Silva equalised for Muang Thong in the 20th.

Muang Thong launched a number of attacks and their best chance to score in the second half was sent sailing over the bar by Cleiton.

Army United got the winning goal from Raphael Sena in the 80th minute and then defended their lead to the end.

At Ratchaburi Stadium, the hosts failed to pick up a point after suffering a 2-1 loss to Suphanburi.

Heberty Fernandes put Ratchaburi ahead in the 27th minute before Prat Samakrat equalised in the 81st and Suphanburi netted the winner through a Sergio van Dijk strike in the 90th minute.

At Nakhon Ratchasima Stadium, the Swat Cats could only manage a 1-1 draw with struggling Saraburi.

Lee Tuck gave Nakhon Ratchasima a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute before Thanongsak Promdart earned a point for Saraburi in the 84th.
