Lockette crumpled to the turf after a hard hit on a punt play by Cowboys safety Jeff Heath, who was flagged for an illegal blindside hit.

Lockette lay motionless on his right side for several minutes with medical personnel surrounding him as players from both teams left their benches.

Lockette appeared to talk to doctors after he was strapped to a backboard, and clenched a fist in a show of strength as he was carried off.

As the teams returned to the field after halftime he was reported to have full movement in his limbs, but was being taken to hospital with a concussion.

It was just one of the injuries on a bruising day in the NFL.

Baltimore wide receiver Steve Smith tore his Achilles tendon in the third quarter of the Ravens' 29-26 win over the San Diego Chargers and will miss the rest of the season.

It could be a career-ending injury for the 36-year-old, who had said when the 2015 campaign started it would be his last.

Smith was hurt making a 17-yard catch-and-run, having earlier passed Hall of Famer Cris Carter for 10th place in career receiving yards.

The Chargers endured a string of injuries in the same game, including ankle injury that saw King Dunlap carted to the locker room and a foot injury to defensive end Corey Liuget who was also carted off. San Diego's Chris Watt left with a shoulder injury, tight end Ladarius Green hurt an ankle and cornerback Patrick Robinson was diagnosed with a concussion.

- Knee injury to Steelers' Bell -

Pittsburg's star running back Le'Veon Bell was knocked out of the second quarter of the Steelers' 16-10 loss to the unbeaten Cincinnati Bengals with a right knee injury.

He didn't return to the contest, but the Steelers were optimistic that he suffered a ligament sprain rather than a tear.

In the same game the Bengals lost linebacker Rey Maualuga to a calf injury and Andre Smith to a possible concussion.

San Francisco 49ers running back Reggie Bush suffered a knee injury in the first half of a 27-6 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Bush was hurt on a punt return when he was pushed out of bounds and slipped on some concrete.

He was to undergo an MRI exam on Monday, with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suspected.

Bears running back Matt Forte also departed his team's 23-20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings with a knee injury.
