Thai team bonus for Asian final round berth stands

The Football Association of Thailand reiterated yesterday that the national team will receive 30 million baht in bonus if they reach Asia's final qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup.

The squad returned to Bangkok from their training camp at Kirin Valley in Khao Yao yesterday and FAT secretary-general Worawut Thongsringarm visited them at Rajamangala National Stadium.

Thailand will take on Taiwan in a World Cup qualifier at the stadium tomorrow.

Kiatisak Senamuang's men lead Group F with 10 points from four matches, five ahead of Iraq who have a game in hand.

Vietnam are third on four, while Taiwan are still looking for their first point.

The eight group winners and four best runners-up will progress to Asia final qualifying round (last 12 teams) for Russia 2018.

"We are just 180 minutes away from advancing to the last-12 team round," Col Worawut said.

Although the FAT has been hit by problems, Worawut said the team will still get the 30 million baht in bonus if they advance to the next round as promised by FAT president Worawi Makudi before he was suspended for 90 days by Fifa.

"I can assure you that we have already prepared the money for you. You don't have to worry about this,'' he said.

Moreover, each player will receive a Mini watch worth 40,000 baht before the Taiwan match, he said.

"Our target is to make the Thai people happy and proud. I am sure that they will be happy,'' said Worawut, who is in charge of the association while Worawi is suspended.

Fifa suspended Worawi in October for a breach of the world governing body's ethics code. Worawi, a former Fifa executive member, is appealing the ban.

Meanwhile, World Cup regulars Australia and Japan need to bounce back from some mediocre performances when qualifying for Brazil 2018 resumes tomorrow.

Australia need to recover from a 2-0 defeat in Jordan last month that put the Socceroos four points behind the men from Amman in Group B.

A home match against Kyrgyzstan should provide a perfect opportunity to Australia to get back to winning ways and close the gap on Jordan.

Japan, held to a goalless draw by Singapore at home in June, travel to the former British colony for the return Group E match with a strong squad.
