Buriram set to pull away from chasers

Second-placed Muang Thong take on Suphanburi as Thai Premier League hostilities resume

The Thai Premier League resumes today after the international break and pacesetters Buriram United could enjoy a bigger lead after this weekend round of matches.

Buriram forward Diogo Santo celebrates scoring a goal.

Defending champions Buriram, who are five points ahead of second-placed SCG Muang Thong United, lead the league standings with 68 points. They should have few problems when they host Chiang Rai tomorrow.

Muang Thong, meanwhile, have a tricky assignment against in-form Suphanburi at their SCG Stadium, also tomorrow.

Buriram have won 10 league matches in a row since they were held to a 2-2 draw by Muang Thong in August.

The Thunder Castle, led by Brazilian forwards Diogo Santo and Gilberto Macena, have been firing on all cylinders, scoring at least three goals a game in their last seven matches.

Muang Thong have stuttered since the 2-2 draw at I-Mobile Stadium in August and critics have already written them off as legitimate challengers.

But the Kirins vow to fight until the end to regain the title.

“We will continue fighting and will not give up,” said Muang Thong manager Karn Jantarat.

Karn said he was worried that his players, who played for Thailand in their 4-2 win against Taiwan in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday, may not be fully fit.

Suphanburi manager Nat Chayutiman said: “It is not easy to play against SCG Muang Thong at their home. But we will do our best and hope to pull off a surprise. We should get at least a point.”

Relegation strugglers Port will be at home against Si Sa Ket today.

It is seen as a good chance for Port to get a result in their fight to avoid the drop.

Also today, Saraburi host fellow relegation contenders Navy.

Tomorrow, Bangkok Glass will be fancying their chances of halting a three-game winless streak when they face bottom-placed TOT at home.

Struggling giants BEC Tero Sasana, whose star midfielder Chanathip Songkrasin made a return to the field in the second half for the national team’s match on Thursday, face sixth-ranked Bangkok United.

BEC Tero are in a desperate need of winning some games after two draws and a loss in their recent outings. They have been hovering pretty close to the relegation zone in the 14th place.
