Deaf Futsal World Cup set for kick-off across Bangkok

Thailand is ready to host the fourth Deaf Futsal World Cup which kicks off on Thursday.

The 10-day competition with an estimated 1,500 athletes will be held at three venues -- Hua Mark Indoor Stadium, Thai-Japan Stadium and Nimibutr Building.

"Everything is in place and we are ready to host the tournament," Sports Authority of Thailand governor Sakol Wannapong told yesterday's press conference.

"It is an honour for Thailand to be the first Asian country to host the event. We have spent 72 million baht to organise the tournament."

A test event was held last month to check the readiness of the venues and facilities.

There are 11 teams in the men's competition.

Thailand are in Group A with the Netherlands, Uzbekistan, Italy and Brazil while Group B features Russia, Iran, Japan, Switzerland, Algeria and Norway. 

On the women's side, there are 16 teams in four groups.

Thailand play Italy, Sweden and China in Group A, while Russia, Turkey, Spain and Japan are in Group B.

Germany face Belgium, Norway and Brazil in Group C, and England, Hungary, Denmark and Iran are in Group D. 

Maj Gen Osoth Pavilai, chairman of the technical department, said he was confident the Thai players will perform well despite being at a physical disadvantage to their European opponents.
