Kirins aim to narrow gap, insist title chase alive

With the Thai Premier League leaders Buriram United busy seeking League Cup glory this weekend, SCG Muang Thong United have a chance to narrow the gap at the top.

Seven league matches are scheduled to be played tomorrow when second-placed Muang Thong United face struggling Chainat, who are languishing in 14th place, at home.

Two matches — Buriram United vs Ratchaburi and Si Sa Ket vs Army United — will be played on Wednesday.

A string of recent setbacks suffered by Muang Thong have helped arch rivals Buriram open up a seven-point lead at the top of the league standings.

However, Muang Thong, second with 64 points from 29 matches, believe their title chances are still alive.

Kirins’ manager Karn Jantarat said: “We are not too far behind Buriram so we are not giving up the title chase, but we must play at our best in the remaining five matches.

“For the match against Chainat, we will be without Datsakorn Thonglao who has an injury but other players are all fit. We are confident of picking up three points from this match.”

Muang Thong’s offence will be led by Cleiton Silva and Teerasil Dangda.

Chainat secretary-general Montset Teerapanont said: “After winning our last match, the players have regained confidence. They are all now looking forward to the match with Muang Thong.

“Although it is difficult to beat them, we are still hoping to claim a point.”

In another important game, Suphanburi take on BEC Tero Sasana.

Suphanburi manager Nat Chayutiman said: “It hasn’t been a great season for us, but we are going to attempt to win every match from now. We are targeting a third-place finish this year.”

BEC Tero coach Manuel Cajuda said: “Since I became the coach, every game that we have played hasn’t been easy at all and this game won’t be any different. We will try to claim a victory to improve our position in the league.”
