Chonburi's ACL play-off berth confirmed

Chonburi will play in the AFC Champions League play-offs instead of Suphanburi, the Thai Premier League confirmed yesterday.

Suphanburi finished third in the 2015 TPL season which ended earlier this month and earned a spot in the ACL play-offs.

However, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) awarded the berth to Chonburi, who were fourth in the TPL, because Suphanburi's stadium failed to meet the standard set by the continental governing body.

The TPL then lodged an appeal with the AFC which would not reverse its decision.

TPL chairman Ong-art Korsinkha said the AFC had already announced that Chonburi would take part in the ACL play-offs and the draw had been made.

"Suphanburi have accepted it,'' Ong-art said.

Suphanburi said they accepted the decision and would improve their stadium.

"We hope to get another chance next season,'' the club said in a statement.

Chonburi will host Myanmar's Yangon United on Feb 2 in a one-off second-round play-off match.

Chonburi or Yangon will go to Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds or FC Tokyo in another one-off match on Feb 9 with the winners reaching the group stage to face Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors from South Korea, Jiangsu Sainty of China and Vietnamese club Becamex Binh Duong in Group E.

TPL champions Buriram United are the only Thai side to receive a direct entry to the group stage where they will meet J-League champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima, FC Seoul from South Korea and one of the qualifiers in Group F.

TPL runners-up SCG Muang Thong United will face Johor Darul Ta'zim from Malaysia and if they win they will play Shanghai SIPG from China.

And if Muang Thong qualify into the group stage they will be in Group G and face Melbourne Victory from Australia, Suwon Bluewings of South Korea and the runners-up of the Japanese league.
