Buriram United made history yesterday when they outplayed bitter rivals SCG Muang Thong United 3-1 in the FA Cup title showdown to lift their fifth trophy of the year.
Goals from Andres Tunez and Ko Seul-Ki on the either side of half-time set the tone of the match and when Jakkraphan Kaewprom found the net again for Buriram, the writing was on the wall for Muang Thong United.
Buriram went into the match seeking their fifth piece of silverware of the season after having captured the King's Trophy, League Cup, Thai Premier League and Mekong Club Championship titles.
The Mekong Club Championship is a regional competition in which Buriram edged Boeung Ket Angkor of Cambodia 1-0 in the final in Bangkok last Sunday.
Muang Thong had more than one reason to win the crown, but they failed.
The Kirins had finished second behind Buriram in this year's league and they were also anxious to end their barren run against their opponents from the northeast.
Muang Thong, skippered by Teerasil Dangda and spearheaded by Mario Gjurovski, were without suspended Sarach Yooyen and also left Datsakorn Thonglao on the bench.
Buriram United were at full strength with Brazilian duo of Gilberto Macena and Diogo Luis Santo leading their attack. Macena played his last match for the club yesterday.
Macena and Diogo were quick to get on with their job as they combined in the first minute to force Muang Thong goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan into action to save a header from Diogo.
The match quickly turned into a hotly contested battle and players from the two sides took turns in committing fouls.
Muang Thong United did make attempts to get the better of the Buriram defence but the formidable combination of Tunez and Koravit Namwiset thwarted their attempts.
In the 22nd minute, Muang Thong counter-attacked through Teerasil whose attempt to set up Cleiton Silva was cleared by Koravit.
Buriram came close to picking up their first goal in the 25th minute when Theerathon Bunmathan saw his first shot saved by Kawin and the second on the rebound warded off by Naoki Aoyama.
Buriram were awarded a penalty two minutes before half-time when Diogo was fouled by Piyaphon Panichakul inside the penalty area. Tunez converted from the spot with ease to put Buriram 1-0 ahead.
Muang Thong tried to claw their way back into the match, but found themselves on the receiving end once again.
Six minutes after the break, Diogo left-footed a chip from just outside the box for Ko to head on, past the outstretched hands of diving Kawin, to double the margin.
A minute later, Muang Thong striker Cleiton's header from a free-kick missed the target and moments after that, Theerathon struck a free-kick over the bar on the other side of the field.
The curler from Jakkraphan in the 67th minute that made the score 3-0, and put the match out of Muang Thong United's reach, was a spectacular piece of work.
Gjurovski, who was kept in check most of the time by Buriram's solid defence, was denied by Theerathon on the line. Muang Thong lodged a futile appeal with the linesman, claiming that Theerathon was behind the line.
However, in the 81st minute, Gjurovski, set up by Chananan Pombupha, succeeded in planting a low left-footed drive into the net to deliver the consolation goal for Muang Thong.
The Thunder Castle kept pressing their rivals as they went all-out in search of more goals.
Buriram captain Suchao Nutnum crossed the ball and Diogo missed an opportunity to add a goal to his name by sending the shot over the bar.
Tempers continued to flare and Muang Thong were left with 10 men in the dying moments when Gjurovski was sent off for picking up his second yellow card of the match.
Besides the trophy, Buriram were rewarded with the winners' purse of five million baht, while Muang Thong received one million baht for finishing second.
