Thais bank on 'Unbeaten Talisman' in Rio bid

Chao Khun Thongchai blesses women's team

The national women's volleyball team have joined a long list of sporting outfits seeking Phra Prommangkalachan's blessings, which have been working like a charm for many including English Premier League leaders Leicester City.

The monk, better known as Chao Khun Thongchai, on Monday predicted that the Thai women's volleyball team "will qualify for the 2016 Olympics".

Thailand have never made it to the Games' indoor volleyball competition.

The national team will join an eight-team qualifying tournament in Japan from May 14-22 with the top four teams earning tickets to the Rio Games from Aug 5-21.

Led by coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai, the squad paid their respects to Phra Prommangkalachan at Wat Traimit Withayaram, also known as the Golden Buddha Temple, on Monday.

"Every player wants to go to the Olympic Games and win a medal," the monk told the team.

"Definitely, you [the women's volleyball team] will qualify for the Olympic Games this time.

"I want to give you moral support to do your best for the Thai people and for the country.

"The Volleyball Association of Thailand has done a good job for a long time and it will perform better in the future."

Chao Khun Thongchai has gained worldwide fame since blessing Leicester City, who could win the Premier League title this morning after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.

The 64-year-old monk gave the volleyball player his holy cloths and amulets, the same as the ones given to Leicester City's players, hoping that these would bestow moral and special powers upon the players and help them succeed.

Chao Khun Thongchai said: "This talisman cloth derives its power from the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha. It has become famous because I gave it to the Leicester players.

"It is called the 'Unbeaten Talisman Cloth' and it has played an important role in Leicester's performance this year.

"The amulets will make you greater and well known in the world."

However, the revered monk added that his holy charms can only supplement the hard work put in by the team and the players.

"Everything depends on mind. If their mind is strong and motivated, they will definitely perform well," he said.

"These blessings and amulets are there to make your minds stronger."

Apart from Leicester, Bangkok Glass and Port FC have also received the blessings from Chao Khun Thongchai and are both doing well. The former are third in the Thai League and the latter lead Division One.

Coach Kiattipong believed that the team had made merits on many occasions but being blessed by Chao Khun Thongchai will be an added boost.

He said: "It makes us more confident in pursuing our goal [of qualifying for the Olympics]. Everyone is working hard. We are well prepared for the tournament and we are almost 100 percent fit."

Captain Pleumjit Thinkaow was happy to have received the blessings but admitted that claiming a ticket to the Rio Games will not be easy.

"Our chances are 50-50 because all the teams are keen to qualify for the Games. I think it will be tougher than four years ago," she said.

Thailand leave for China on Wednesday to play two friendly matches before heading to Japan on May 12. They will face the Dominican Republic (May 14), Italy (May 15), the Netherlands (May 17), Japan (May 18), Kazakhstan (May 20), South Korea (May 21) and Peru (May 22).
