Mueller starts for Bayern against Atletico

MUNICH (GERMANY) - Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola included Thomas Mueller in the home starting line-up for Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg at home to Atletico Madrid.

Bayern Munich's midfielder Thomas Mueller (R) and his teammates make their way on to the pitch prior to the UEFA Champions League semi-final, second-leg football match between FC Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in Munich, Germany, on May 3, 2016

Mueller and fellow German international Jerome Boateng came in along with Franck Ribery as Guardiola made three changes to the team that started last Wednesday's 1-0 defeat in the first leg in Madrid.

Guardiola was widely criticised in the German media for leaving Mueller on the bench for the first leg, when Saul Niguez scored Atletico's winner.

Mueller replaced Thiago Alcantara while Ribery has recovered from a back injury and takes the place of Kingsley Coman on the wing.

Boateng is included at centre-back having played an hour of Bayern's 1-1 draw at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Saturday on his return after tearing his groin in January.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone made just one change from the side which won in Madrid.

Uruguay defender Diego Godin returns for Stefan Savic at centre-back after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Guardiola is hoping to make it third time lucky in his bid to reach the Champions League final with Bayern in his last season before leaving Munich to coach Manchester City.

Bayern lost the 2014 semi-final to Real Madrid 5-0 on aggregate before exiting the 2015 semis with a 5-3 defeat to Barcelona over two legs.

Bayern are hoping to reach their fourth final in the last seven seasons, while Atletico are bidding to mirror their run to the 2014 final.
