Senator slams hike in gas prices

Bangkok senator Rosana Tositrakul has opposed PTT Plc's plan to raise the price of natural gas for vehicles (NGV) and a planned increase in the price of LPG.

Bangkok senator Rosana Tositrakul: The process to raise the LPG price lacks transparency. She said on Monday that the price of raw gas on the global market has gone down to 3.37 baht a kilogram while the price of gas from the Gulf of Thailand was lower than the world market price by 40 to 67 per cent."When PTT says the cost of gas stands at 8.38 baht and transportation at 5.56 baht, they are being misleading because they have a monopoly without any competition," Ms Rosana said.On the national energy...

    People with knowledge in simple Economics should understand why subsidies are bad for development to borrow a phrase "The truth is that we are all faced with two basic choices... either we deregulate and survive economically, or we continue with a subsidy regime that will continue to undermine our economy and potential for growth, and face serious consequences.".Looks like its back to school for you, "Senator"

    Always the drama queen. What has monopoly got to do with costs? PTT is a public listed company and their books are open for public scrutiny and audit. We can't keep distorting market price. Someone has to pay for this subsidy like us.

    Maybe this senator is right ... maybe not ... but it would surely be a good idea to liberalize the system as a whole, the state should not run business or banks for that matter, so sell off the assets and let the market price rule, best for everybody.
