Taxi operators call off protest

Taxi operators called off their protest rally in front of Government House after the government agreed to set up a committee to find ways of solving problems arising from the the phased increase in the price of NGV set to begin on Jan 16.

The agreement was reached after a meeting between representatives of the taxi operators, led by Vithoon Naewpanich, and the permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry, director of the Land Transport Department, and director of the Energy Policy and Planning Office.

The meeting agreed to set up a committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, comprising representatives of the Energy and Transport ministries and taxi operators.

So Rice farmers want top dollar for their crops, Rubber farmers want the Govt to ensure that they get top dollar for their crops, the Govt has promissed a minimum wage of 300 Baht per day, food and other comodities have gone up with inflation; but Taxi Drivers want their NGV to remain the same? Everybody's costs go up except for those who protest and disrupt others trying to make a living. where does all this money come from and how much tax do the Taxi Drivers pay? You get what you vote for!

Subsidizing anything in the long term only benefits the operators - not the users so this is a logical move for the government. The rice subsidies scheme should also be reviewed aswell.

if it was a Democrat government, would they have been satisfied with setting up a committee? i'll never understand why taxi drivers supported thaksin. in his six-plus years in power he never raised taxi fares even once.
