New NE rail route proposed

The Transport Ministry will tomorrow submit a proposal to a mobile cabinet meeting in Udon Thani for the construction of a new 336 kilometre rail line between Khon Kaen and Nakhon Phanom at an estimated cost of 41.363 billion baht.

Pranot Suriya, deputy director of the Office of Transport and Policy and Planning, said the new rail route would run across the central Northeast, linking Ban Phai in Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Mukdahan and  Nakhon Phanom.

It wouldgreatly expand the existing Nakhon Ratchasima-Nong Khai and Nakhon Ratchasima-Ubon Ratchathani rail network.

What is the point of making a new rail line to wherever, when the present system is slow, ineffecient from Bangkok to close Cities/Towns. If I was to travel to Nakhon Pathom after this new line has been made, it would still be quicker by bus (driven by some lunatic at faster than safe speed). But the rail service would also not be safe, judging by the number of derailments lately.

How about new rail service for the country .Our train service is more outdated than our education .China offered to pay for it .It would have been done in China already .What are you waiting for ? Our gauge of track isn't compatible with any other country .

jacksprat: the proposal is to link Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Mukdahan and Nakhon Phanom. Are not all these provinces deserving of a rail service?

In other words, privatisation of the SRT, is up in the stars.
Read the BP article about the SRT "black hole" 9run by the govemrments in the past and now),dated 23.01.2012 and think again.

A total managment overhaul in line with a privatisation within 1 year, prior to any new railway links is needed. More corruption and total chaos, seems however preferred by the hands hauling the "golden goose", on the expense of the tax payer and the safety of the commuters.

This is long overdue. It is the only great decision I have seen come from any government we have had in the last ten years. It is particularly appropriate now that the new bridge to Laos has been opened. Hopefully, Vietnam will continue the link all the way to Hanoi. I do think that the link should also include Mukdahan. Now the North needs to be linked to the Northeast without having to go all the way the Ayudhya, change trains, and double back.

Nakorn Phanom is a lot cloesr to Nong Khai than Khon Kaen, so why not build a line to connect with Nong Khai instead? Or wouldn't that cost enough money to keep the contractors happy?

... and everyone waits in anticipation if there will be another burglary at some transport officials house and a secret stash of money will be found again, maybe maybe not. Just a cynical pause for thought.

Good idea...Thailand is lacking in infrastructure , not least in the north east. Linking the north/north east with better connections to Bangkok and to ports will speed up the development of these areas as the better infrastructure will make them more attractive for industries.
