Airlines get big discounts for move to Don Mueang

Bangkok's dual-airport policy 'now concluded'

The Airports of Thailand Plc board has approved massive discounts on airport fees in a move to attract airlines to Don Mueang airport.

Sumet: Huge discounts for first two months

AoT chairman ACM Sumet Photimanee yesterday said the discounts, backed yesterday, would be huge in the first two months and become gradually smaller over three years.

The OaT, together with all bureaucratic authorities, will have to come up with a lot more than massive discounts or incentives to attract potential visitors to come here while news around the world is 'chock a block' with items relating to murder, police and political corruption and rip offs that occur here daily basis.... Alas, Thailand is its own worst enemy but hasn't yet realized it.

@Hillfarang ... a prop plane in 1981? Must have been a domestic flight or military. I didn't see and prop planes at Don Muang one my first arrival in 1973 (except for the RTAF section of the airport).

Terrible idea and inconvenient. Run and expand Suvarnabhumi properly, the expansion should have started the day it opened. The AOT is a total incompetent organization. Phukets airport should have been expanded 10 years ago as well. Don Meuang should be bulldozed over and a massive park built to ensure the city has lungs and a massive natural recreation area. This policy is probably driven more by vested interests in Don Meuang then a competent cohesive development plan for the future of air traffic in Bangkok. Can't wait to see all the posting in October from all the people who support it complaining about making a domestic connection from an international flight. Maybe they should go back to the times when you had to take provincial bus service to get anywhere in the provinces, it'll take about the same time to travel now.

Ahh.. nostalgia, thinking about my 1981 landing in Don Muang on a prop plane... wooden ramp for luggage, hot, humid, fragrant air of SE Asia in the face, wonderful memories watching the place grow, change, close, open close & now open again!

Then, there's that hard-to-describe feeling of 'liking' Don Muang while many people do not like the new airport, Sum&^$#*%... well, you know, that unpronounceable, un-spell-able place!

Although Suvarnabhumi is newer, for some reason I think many feel like Don Mueang was more efficient and faster to get through. Anyone agree?

Excellent news and finally a good logical business minded decision by the AOT and Thai government, a positive sign of a step in the right direction by the Yingluck team. Only one questions remains to be answered....where and when is the promised Sky Train extension going to be completed??

Excellent , Don Muang will be a very good LC airport and give Suvarnabhumi a bit of time to expand it's size as well.

Fully agreed with the 2 airports strategy. There just too much investments on DM to abandon it. Moreover, the airport is not located in a strategic part of the city and land use will be of lesser significance unlike the old airports in KL, Singapore or even Taiwan. There the domestic airports are located inside the city and there are more value for commercial uses. As for links, the BTS Rangsit line will be opened in 2 years and I am sure there are plans to use that for linkage. Also the expressway which is very conveniently located and takes less than 45 minutes drive time to reach Suvarnabumi.

Agreed! The Thailand government should quickly expand the rail link between the airports which will only help generate an increase in domestic air traffic combined with their International flights. Instead of people going for ground transport to other parts of Thailand, due to the Hassle!

Finally, a sensible decision on Don Muang. How many posters here had suggested the historic airport be torn down and the land turned into housing estates!
