Bomb detectors 'would delay buses'

Any plan to use bomb detectors on public buses needs to be reconsidered as it would slow down services, Deputy Transport Minister Chadchart Sittiphan said on Tuesday.

"We need to thoroughly study the plan and assess the consequences first," Mr Chadchart said.

The Transport Company's buses currently make about 8,000 trips a day and serve more than 240,000 passengers, he said.

"Using bomb detectors on public buses might slow down services and the investment cost must also be taken into consideration.

"I don't think the Transport Co bus routes are used by arms smugglers as they most likely use private vehicles," the deputy minister said.

On Aug 5, at Bangkok's Mor Chit terminal, a bag containing firearms and grenades was found on a bus that arrived from the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

After the incident, Thai Bus Operators Association president Sujinda Cherdchai said she agreed that bomb detectors should be used on public buses for passengers' safety.
