Govt mulls cancelling half of Red Line project

The Transport Ministry is considering cancelling about half of the upcoming Red Line electric train project, which would link Bang Sue in Bangkok to Rangsit in Pathum Thani.

Chatt: Orders ministry study

Two days after the conclusion of bidding for the construction of that section of the route, Deputy Transport Minister Chatt Kuldiloke said yesterday he had ordered a study on the ministry's proposal to terminate the project, supervised by the State Railways of Thailand (SRT).

The planning department is a joke.
If it overlaps other lines, then instead of playing facebook, the planners should have identified the issue long ago!
If the line is almost finished, what a waste not to complete it. In years to come, as Bkk expands, it will be of immense value in reducing traffic congestion & it will improve the quality of the citizen's lives.
Just maybe, there was not sufficient 'commission' in the job for the decision makers!

If Disc. 3 is accurate then that preparation and cost must be included in the assessment and weighted sufficiently to reflect the money already spent. This information should have been included in the original story and is the type of added insight that I would expect a story in the BP to include. How about a follow up BP?

Has this or any previous government ever considered how to plan ahead constructively and carry out projects effectively within budgets? How many decades did it take to come up with the new airport that from day 1 was under designed for the expected traffic volume, not to mention all the design deficiencies.

This line has been under heavy construction for more than two years! It's almost finished! It is desperately needed as traffic in the area is terrible, especially due to the construction of this line. If they scrap it now, they wouldn't save any money; they would be wasting all the money that has gone into the preparation work. People have been waiting on this line for years; they've made major real estate investments based on their anticipation! This news makes me angry!

I wonder how many subway lines overlap in London? If the government wanted to save money it would be very easy, announce to the bidders "I don't commissions and just give me the very best price, it's for the country" ... I guess I must be dreaming.

A coordinated development plan would be refreshing.
