New Bangkok bus lines to Laos

The state-run Transport Co Ltd will offer direct coach services between Bangkok and Vientiane and Bangkok to Pakse in Laos under a policy to boost transport networks with neighbouring countries.

Each destination will have one service a day using standard airconditioned buses and the one-way fare for both routes is 900 baht. The route from Bangkok to Vientiane will take 11 hours, leaving Bangkok at 8pm while the bus for Pakse leaves at 9pm and will take 13 hours.

Wuthichart Kalayanamit, president of Transport Co, said the two routes are an extension of two other routes while it has another seven routes running between Thailand and Laos such as Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang and Khon Kaen to Vientiane.

900 baht?! That's expensive! I pay about 600-700 baht one-way for VIP first class. That usually includes food and drinks too. But I'd be happy to pay 900 baht if they played some decent movies for a change!

Wouldn't it be even better if they encouraged more Rail connections? Out here in Aranya there are quite a few buses that pass between the Cambodia border and Bangkok.

And a vastly underused railway with just two trains per day.

That same railway could be used to take a lot of heavy-goods vehicles off the roads - there are several-hundred trucks (many with trailers) every day.

Interestingly, the rail tracks, which are now overgrown, used to go through to the border. Perhaps it's about time 'someone' woke-up to this wonderful, underused resource?

D1, Agree 100% this country needs to get control of the buses that are already killing people before expanding their deadly horizons.
