Airport Rail Link has decided to stop charging the flat 20-baht discounted fare for its City Line after it failed to attract as many passengers as expected, resulting in the service running at a loss of almost two million baht a month, the Matichon website reported on Thursday.

Chamroon Tangpaisarnkit, chairman of the SRT Electric Train Co which runs the Airport Rail Link, on Thursday said the company board had decided not to extend the 20-baht discounted rate ― which began on Oct 1 and ended on Dec 31, for the system's City Line between 11am and 2pm ― because the number of passengers still fell short of the target.

Clarification: It says here that the flat-20 baht fare ended on 31 December. I asked this because we went to savurmabhumi airport last December 22 and we rode at the airport rail going to Phaya Thai and we paid about 45 baht and then from phaya Thai to mochit, around 35 baht. This news is not true I thought, we should have paid the flat 20 baht fare since that was December 22 then, Seems news stories we read here are not necessarily true. hahahah

If they are losing 2 million Baht on the City Line how much is being lost on the Airport Express with just a handful of passengers per trip? Just send your Reporter to the Station to count.

It's probable you would not get an answer but likely to top the Billion - absolute dynamite! - hush hush

Much easier to talk about the overcrowded City Line which could not take anymore passengers without increasing its schedule.

Tryagain you are right but right hand turns are banned in Thailand in preference to life threatening and congestion making U-Turns. The train is a good idea just badly planned and managed as allready said, plus tourists have no idea that its even there most of the time or where to go once you arrive in BK

Extend the platform just a few meters and the train station is connected to the sky train and will become an integrated part of Bangkok's mass transport system. Having it stand alone there in the pampa does not make any sense.

@D9: It's not a folly, it's totally required, but it's just totally mismanaged. It's also potentially repairable, but needs redesign and extension. It's fast, cheap and reliable. Trouble is the stations are uncomfortable (as are the trains) and the information is unhelpful. Arrivals at the airport are encouraged towards the express line, whereas the city line is far more practical. It should also be a 24 hr service.

passengers from suvarnabhumi usually have a lot of baggages hence, they prefer to take taxi as it will drives them to their desination directly without transfering from one care to the other. Simple but valid reasons.

It's a great asset, poorly planned, implemented and managed. It matches the airport that looks great but is actually a nightmare to use with endless walks and poor facilities. Another example of operators failing to take on board best practice and advice.
