BANGKOK - The Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation has urged the government to clamp down on drunk driving with harsher sentences.

Dr Taejing Siripanich, the foundation’s secretary-general, said on Saturday that during holidays, such as New Year and Songkran, authorities should zealously crack down on driving under the influence of alcohol, just as they do on narcotics.

The police might want to try driving around and stopping the people that are driving drunk maybe stop them before they kill someone. But that would require them to do real work. Not just ganging up at one location and waiting for the drivers.

As with most of Thailand's problems, education is the key.

Thais don't see anything wrong with drink driving.

A series of hard-hitting commercials showing the aftermath of drink-driving accidents and a sea-change in the way drink driving is perceived is necessary. If Thais can be taught that it's anti-social, dangerous and very 'uncool', perhaps the younger generation will be the first to act responsibly.

"He also proposed offering a cash incentive of one million baht for provinces that successfully reduce the number of road fatalities each year. During the past decade, the number of drunk-driving accidents had risen constantly, he added."

Won't work. Too many lie and under-report. Plus a road fatality isn't counted if the person dies in the hospital. Real and honest statistics, enforcing current laws, and enforcing them year-round and not just during the Seven Dangerous Days.

Why not ask the police to calibrate their breath-analysers and start doing their job first?
