Commuter hell on Phahon Yothin Road | Bangkok Post: news

Despite promises, Phahon Yothin traffic getting worse

Despite government promises, Bangkok commuters continue to suffer from extraordinarily heavy traffic on outbound Phahon Yothin road, especially near the Mor Chit skytrain station where public buses, mini vans and taxis queueing for passengers block most lanes.

The Mor Chit station is also an interchange with Chatuchak subway station.

Outbound Phahon Yothin road consists of five lanes. It is extremely congested most days and particularly on work days during rush hours, as three of the lanes are usually occupied by private cars, taxis, mini vans and public buses. And it's not getting any better. Quite the contrary.

Many, many, good ideas but I favor "Park & Ride " which has proven, in many cities to be the single most efficient low cost traffic control system. The govt. should provide free/low cost parking areas outside metro BKK, plus free/low cost mini shuttle busses to popular work/shopping/medical stops and ban all vehicles, exclusive of police/fire/ambulance, from the most congested areas during the busiest hours. Less traffic, polution, less fuel used, fewer accidents/injuries and much less delay and frustration.

"These vendors are taking over the city." Because they pay rent for the space they occupy. Guess whom they pay it to.

As I have raised before in these discussions, central Bangkok to have the same 3-in-1 rule as central Jakarta, it works there and Jakarta has a far larger transport poblem than Bangkok, but the 3-in-1 rule works and easily policed!

To ease traffic jams, only logical thing to do... 1. relocates some of those businesses out from Bangkok. 2. Car pool and 3. Designated driver lanes, for bus, pedestrian, cycle, motorcycle, etc.

Interesting article. Unfortunately, this same article could be written about almost every other bus stop in the Bangkok area.

He said the Chatuchak district office would make sure there were no street vendors along the pavement near the Mor Chit skytrain station and the Chatuchak subway station,

What bunch of words. These vendors are taking over the city. I remember when Khao san Road use to be a road. Now its a path.

There are 30,000 students at the University of Kasetsart, none of them ride the train that runs parallel to Viphawadi. (The train is free for Thai, 2 baht for me). If the train would stop at the overhead walkway at the KU Viphawadi gate, they would probably use it. The commute by train from Don Muang to KU is almost twice as fast as the bus. The train stops at Bang Khen, which is too far from KU gate #2. Oh well, never mind.

As long as the Thai police refuse to do their job and as long as the bussdrivers/taxidrivers refuse to follow the trafficlaws there will always be problems in that area.It is the busses that cause most of the problems along with private cars.Private cars park in the left lane reserved for busses right under/next to the NO PARKING sign. The busdrivers drive in the right lane cutting accross into the left lane for every busstop..As soon as the bus has let passengers off/on he again cuts into the right lane. When busdrivers decide to drive slalom there is nothing anyone can do but let them through.Nothing will change until the police do their job.
