Train derails in Uttaradit

A Bangkok-Chiang Mai special express train derailed early Saturday in a tunnel while heading for Chiang Mai with 415 passengers, many of them foreigners. Nobody was hurt.

The derailment, which occurred at about 3am, has blocked all Bangkok- and Chiang Mai-bound trains.

Poonsawat Im-emchai, the chief of Sila-at railway station, said the Chiang Mai-bound train derailed in the 382-metre-long tunnel between Ban Pang Ton Phueng station in Muang district of Uttaradit province and Huay Rai station in Den Chai district of Phrae

About 30 buses were arranged so that passengers could proceed with their trips to Chiang Mai and other destinations from the Sila-at station in Uttaradit.

The deteriorated condition of the rail tracks was believed to have caused the derailment.

Derailments are frequent on the northern route. The last incident was on July 17, also involving a Bangkok-Chiang Mai special express train.
