Suvarnabhumi sees arrivals drop

Inbound passengers at Thailand’s main international airport are expected to decline up to 7.7% this year, general manager Raweewan Netarakavesana said.

Suvarnabhumi airport officials anticipate arrivals of 48-50 million, down from 52 million in 2013, a decline of 3.8% to 7.7%.

Ms Raweenwan said the airport has served 44 million inbound passengers in 2014, so a maximum of 50 million was forecast for the year. The airport earlier forecast growth of 8% in inbound passengers.

The smaller numbers entering Thailand by air was the by-product of months of political unrest, plus China's curbing of "zero-dollar" tours. However, Ms Raweewan said, the waiving of visa requirement for Chinese and Taiwanese for three-month stays starting Aug 1 will stimulate tourist arrivals.

The Suvarnabhumi airport served approximately 110,000 inbound passengers a day during low tourism season and around 140,000 during high season.
