Chamroon Tangprisalkit, chairman of SRT Electrified Co, said on Wednesday the company decided to scrap the express train service for two periods from 6am to 10am and 10pm to midnight from Sept 1.

Some express trains will be used to serve passengers on the more popular City Line, he added.

Express Line is struggling to fill seats on the trains with the average daily number of passengers reaching only 300 to 400. City Line's daily average passengers are 48,000.

"On some trips there are less than 10 passengers on the Express Line and some carriages don't have even a single passenger at all," said Suthep Phunpeng, who is in charge of operations.

Some express trains will be pulled from service for maintenance, he added.
