Southern trains resume at Cha-am

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) resumed southern train services through Cha-am district of Phetchaburi at about 12.30pm on Thursday after clearing a train that had derailed there early in the morning.

After the tracks were cleared, some south-bound trains from Bangkok were delayed because they had to wait for trains to arrive in the capital from the South.

The SRT reported the reopening of the track near Huai Sai Nua train station in Cha-am. Two carriages of the rapid train number 168 from Kantang district of Trang province heading for Bangkok had derailed there at about 2.30am on Thursday. No one was injured.

A rescue train was sent from Bang Sue district of Bangkok to clear the cars and repair the track.

Before railway services could resume, the SRT deployed buses to collect passengers on southern trains affected by the derailment. The blockage between Hua Hin and Cha-am stations affected 12 trains running between Bangkok and southern destinations.

The two carriages that derailed were not carrying passengers at the time. The wheels went off the track but the carriages did not overturn.

Surapong Wannawit, assistant inspector of Thon Buri train station, said the derailment resulted from a flaw in the braking systems of the luggage carriages.

Prasong Komuk, chief of Hua Hin train station in Prachuap Khiri Khan, said the derailment left about 1,100 passengers stranded at his station and buses were deployed to help them.

On Tuesday a local train derailed in Sai Yok district of Kanchanaburi province and blocked train services to the Death Railway. No one was injured in the incident.
