Malaysia boosts trains to Thai border

Malaysia said Thursday it was on course to upgrading its rail service with higher-speed trains that will eventually link its capital to the important border town of Padang Besar.

The Malaysian state railway agency will launch the new electric train service from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth in June, the Star Online reported.

It planned to expand the service to Padang Besar in the near future, chairman Datuk Nawawi Ahmad was quoted as saying.

"(This is part of the) operation linking Padang Besar to KL (Kuala Lumpur). But first, in June 2015, it will be between Butterworth and KL," he said.

Padang Besar is a border town in the Malaysian state of Perlis. Another part of Padang Besar is in Sadao district of Songkhla province.

Its electric trains can travel at 160 kilometres per hour, 20km/h faster than the present one, on the double-tracking system.

The new train cars are made by CSR Zhuzhou of China.

Malaysia is improving its overall rail system from diesel power to electric engines.
