Jet Asia adds routes on scheduled runs

Charter-focused Thai carrier Jet Asia Airways has ramped up its scheduled service by adding two international routes.

The airline inaugurated its scheduled flights from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport to Jakarta last Monday and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last Tuesday.

These new routes form part of Jet Asia's ongoing scheduled service expansion as it transitions to a full-service airline with scheduled service from being solely a charter operation before, president and chief executive Jacob Saba said.

The migration kicked off in October with the launch of four scheduled weekly flights from Suvarnabhumi to Narita airport, Tokyo's main international gateway.

The airline is taking a further step to expand its scheduled flight programme by seeking permission from Chinese authorities to operate flights from Bangkok to Beijing, Shenyang and Cheung Chau.

Jet Asia Airways expects to commence scheduled service to those three destinations, each with four flights a week, at the end of next March, the start of airlines' six-month summer flight programme, an airline insider told the Bangkok Post.

It has four flights a week to Jakarta and two a week to Jeddah.

Until recently, 70% of Jet Asia's business was derived from charter flights. About 80% of its charter business comes from China where it flies to 16 cities.

The airline operates 35 flights a week during peak periods and 10 a week during low seasons.

Mr Saba said the scheduled Jakarta and Jeddah flights were an integral part of the migration to a full-service airline.

This includes improved access to global distribution systems and a proprietary online booking engine that allowed passengers to purchase Jet Asia tickets online, he said.
