Khon Kaen cameras see 300 speeders

Khon Kaen highway police will send speeding tickets by mail to more than 300 hasty motorists caught by cameras breaking the speed limit in the province over the New Year’s holiday.

Pol Capt Pornchai Saengsila, a deputy highway police inspector at the 4th Highway Police Division, said officers checked cameras at the end of the seven-day road-safety campaign to find more than 300 motorists had put the pedal to the metal.

The speed limit for vehicles, except trucks, is 80 kilometres per hour inside city limits, 90km/h on intra-provincial highways outside city limits, 110km/h on expressways and 120km/h on intra-provincial motorways.

The officer said police are in the process of verifying registration numbers of speedy vehicles before sending tickets to their owners. They are required to pay a fine for violating traffic laws.

The speed cameras have been installed at spots prone to accidents, particularly along the Northeast-bound Mitraparp highway, as a measure to prevent and reduce accidents and losses, he said.
